President Warren welcomed the attendees and noted that today is the annual meeting for the Club.
- Dean and Claire have their 25th wedding anniversary today (noting Dean’s commitment to the Club in attending Rotary this morning!).
- Mary still has some coffee pots left over from the breakfast.
- Pauline has Christmas puddings available for delivery today. Contact Pauline to collect your Christmas pudding and be ready to demonstrate that payment has been made.
- Warwick is looking for sorters for Foodbank. Dates are 9, 11 and 12 December, midday – 2:00pm. Please contact Warwick if you can help.
- Ron Fyfe – As previously announced, The Warehouse is making donations to Women’s Refuge. There are three Rotary Clubs helping and Tauranga Sunrise will be working with the Tauriko Crossing store. Ron is looking for a liaison person to talk to The Warehouse and to the relevant refuges, and to do deliveries.
- Reminder – Fellowship dinner at Zest on Wednesday, 11 December. Twenty people are committed so far. Please contact Les Geraghty.

President Warren opened the AGM. The meeting went rapidly through the usual palaver of accepting apologies and approving the Minutes of last year’s meeting.
Past President Pat presented his report. Ray presented the finance report and Neville presented the Trust report.
Warwick de Vere was nominated as Secretary and very rapidly approved by acclamation. Lynda Burch is the President nominee for the 2022-2023 Rotary year.
All the reports have previously been circulated to members.
There was discussion about the desirable amount of money which should be retained as reserves. Currently that is a little over $100,000. There was also discussion about whether the Club should enter into funding commitments for more than one year. Currently, the Board has adopted a (new) policy of entering into commitments for only one year. A number of members think that should be three years.
There was a resolution moved by Ken that the Board consider three year funding commitments and report back to the members (carried without dissent).
There was further discussion about having a social business which can be used to reliably generate funds each year, and a suggestion that a working group be established to look at options that will work for our Club with its particular profile of membership.
The meeting closed at 7:56am.
The raffle was won by Neil Matson.
Sergeant’s Session: Ken White recorded that he has
now moved to Matamata and bought a villa which dates back to 1917. This has given him reason to be concerned that the foundations may have been underdone due to the World War that was underway at the time.
Ken went on to recount a number of differences he noted upon arrival from Canada a few years ago:
- In Canada if you want to make a note of someone’s name and phone number, you would write it on a packet of matches or similar – he was somewhat shocked to find that New Zealanders would write the number on their hand;
- On going to a café for a cup of coffee (which to his surprise turned out to be instant coffee) and needing to use a toilet, he found that a New Zealand café may not have a toilet on the premises;
- On going to a THC branded hotel, he found that the spa and swimming pool were closed for renovations but that the management had failed to make arrangements with another hotel for the use of its facility;
- He had to learn to eat minted peas and oranges with potatoes;
- He learned that tea breaks are taken seriously in this country;
- On taking a pair of dress trousers to have the zip replaced, he was handed back his trousers with a jeans-style zip gleaming out at him; and
- On taking his dress shoes to be re-soled, he took delivery to find that the replacement soles were something which would have been suitable for a walk in the bush.
But he is still here!
President Warren closed with a reminder that next Friday partners are invited to attend the meeting. Please advise Warren of numbers by lunch time on Wednesday.
