Guest Speaker – Hilary Price: Homes of Hope - introduced by Andrew Knowles

Homes of Hope is a charitable trust that is passionate about delivering quality care services, that
seek to keep siblings together, for children who have been impacted by trauma. They seek to do this
through whānau style homes and therapeutic interventions that focus on the individual needs of the
child, and seeks to rebuild their sense of identity, self-worth, and self-belief so they can either be
reunited with their whānau or supported to find their forever home.

Their objectives are:
  • Help heal trauma
  • Promote healthy development
  • Nurture trusting relationships
  • Facilitate transition to permanency
Hilary outlined the work of the trust explaining the importance of developing appropriate responses
to a family’s particular needs, early intervention and sustainability. She acknowledged that working
with at risk children and their families was complicated specialist work and that change takes time.
Nevertheless, she was able to share some success stories. She also acknowledged that organisations
like Homes of Hope were currently working in a challenging political environment.

Andy Cameron thanked Hilary for sharing the Homes of Hope story and the support that Homes of Hope provide for some of our most vulnerable children and their families.

Sergeant at Arms
Sergeant Kevin provided a personal perspective on housing supply issues within the broader community. He affirmed the Homes for Hope approach but suggested that increased private equity was the answer and that the current government’s approach was moving in the right direction including macro changes such as freeing up more land and micro changes designed to reduce costs.
He also commented favourably on the valuable role of community providers while acknowledging
that it was important to achieve the right balance.

Parting Thought from David McConnochie
