GENERAL . Purongo o te Ao Kakarauri- Coronial Services of New Zealand o Responsible for investigating certain kinds of death o Governing legislation is the Coroners Act 2006 .
There is 20 full-time Coroners, including Chief Coroner and Deputy Chief Coroner .
8 relief Coroners appointed for 5 years as .75 FTE roles Services operating 24 hours /7 days a week .
They decide the cause and circumstances of sudden or unexplained deaths and deaths in "special circumstances" and make recommendations or comments to prevent further deaths occurring in similar circumstances .
Tupapaku or Deceased - I speak for her / him Deaths without known cause, suicide, unnatural or violent Deaths for which a doctor cannot or will not medically certify Deaths occurring during or as result of medical procedure and unexpected Death of a woman in childbirth, or as result of pregnancy or giving birth.
Death of a person in official custody or care (i.e. prison, Police custody, subject to mental health orders, Oranga Tamariki) Missing persons Mass fatalities (i.e. Al Noor Mosque, Whakaari/ White lsland)
Our Stakeholders are- Whanau / families, Pathologists, Doctors, Police, expert advisors, regulatory investigating agencies (i.e. WorkSafe, ACC, CAA, HDC)

Court has the highest level of gender diversity . Coroners are not Doctors - but we have all been Lawyers . Wear blue gowns - not black gowns
