Guest Speaker – Christine Young
Christine gave an interesting talk which doubled as a history of TKD and its close ties to the history
of Korea. She said that she came to TKD with a blue belt in jujitsu. TKD took off in Korea after the
end of World War 2 and the end of the Japanese occupation. The man largely responsible for the
initiation of TKD was General Choi Hong Hi. He apparently taught the 15-25,000 troops under his
command saying that everyone should receive TKD training. Christine had a photograph of her at
the General’s grave in Korea.
Christine came to TKD in an interesting way which included a stint in Oxford UK and being chosen for
the English national team. She is a 7th Dan black belt.
In answer to a question Christine agreed that TKD was very "jumpy, spinny, shouty."
Notices & Announcements
President Indeevar welcomed our visitors and announced:
- From 13 September the club will be resuming its' breakfast meetings at the Tauranga Club.
- He noted that District Governor James Clegg
would be visiting that day.
- Michele announced the next K-valley planting day which would be 29 September. There are something like 4,500 plants to be given new homes. It was noticed by some alert person that that day was also the start of daylight saving.
- Kathy gave a reminder about the Op Shop Hop event and members are invited to call or email her if you can help.
Raffle
The vino was won by Phil to the usual chorus of envious disbelief and disappointment. Phil kindly presented his prize to our guest speaker Christine.
Sergeant at Arms
Barry - as sergeant with some assistance from the audience – then gave us some examples of
impromptu drama including a tableau which looked very much like a man being shot in the ear and
ducking for cover... A helpful elf then helped with an impromptu quiz. The elf attempted to see how
many chocolate prizes she could get to recipients by throwing and bouncing them off the ceiling.
Parting Thought
The parting thought from Rosalie was a repeat of Barry’s opening foray:
"A good person will never belittle others but uplift and empower them instead."
Everyone then sang the national anthem with the usual gusto.
