It was Erica’s Birthday on Wednesday the 1^st of December and David McConnochie on Thursday 2^nd December 2021.

There were no Rotary Anniversaries.

 

Guest Speaker: Chatiya Nantham and Premila D’Mello from MULTICULTURAL TAURANGA 

Our Dearest member Shiv Thammalla kindly introduced the guest speakers Chatiya and Premila from Multicultural Tauranga. It is a charitable, non-profit, and non-religious organization that supports and guides immigrants from all over the world that live in Tauranga area. Multicultural Tauranga is a branch organization of umbrella organization New Zealand Federation of Multicultural councils. The club members welcomed them both with a round of applause.

Premila then went on to start the presentation by explaining the mission of the organization which is to provide service to help migrants settle successfully and promote cultural diversity and harmony within our communities. She then informed us that the organization has helped and guided many people within the Tauranga in their journey to settle in their new surroundings for more than 2 decades. Organization also facilitates cross cultural activities, hold events, provide personal counselling sessions, immigration advice and walk in Justice of Peace service. Chatiya explained how the services are offered to all immigrants free of cost and it makes it attractive for migrants across the spectrum. Special mention was made for the impact of COVID 19 on the migrant communities who faced complete disconnect with their loved ones for extended periods of time. It prompted COVID response and aid as part of the organizational services. Premila shared a very touching story where organization was able to help a couple of 2 young children get to work by facilitating baby-sitting duties so that mum could go to work. Along with all these wonderful services they also talked about future goals of organization. It included being more visible in the communities and offer services to more people in the Tauranga region and concurrently find resources to facilitate those expanded services. Future focus on offering immigration advice for the immigrants was also brought to light especially in environment of uncertainty with border restrictions. Premila was diligent to recognize and acknowledge the role Rotary club could play in expanding the resource pool in terms of human as well as monetary capital. Both Premila and Chatiya also answered questions with precision and informed the members that one of the most sought-after service was regarding jobs. They also informed us that the office for the organization is based in historic village.  Questions regarding immigration revealed that it’s one of the main focuses of the organization and will require added resource allocation to service the demand. They concluded by thanking Shiv and the club for the opportunity to present to the wonderful audience.

 

Speaker Thanks: David McConnochie thanked the speakers for their immense contribution in making a difference for immigrant population. He also recognized their invaluable effort towards making Tauranga inclusive.

 

25-year presentation: Jane Nees present to the club celebration of 25 years of Rotary Tauranga sunrise. She shared with us some photos from her tenure as the president in 2003-04. At the time members used to meet at the then called the Spinnakers Restaurant. That year we had an American exchange student called Liz. She shared some cherished photos in the presentation as she recited a heartwarming poem to compliment the photo gallery. The experience was truly mesmerizing and touching. As photos make everyone laugh, the poem brought back cherished memories of the amazing club events. She also recalled the Supreme Sunrise award at the end of her tenure to Sally Morrison who was recognized as most committed Rotarian as she travelled North Island and countries like Vietnam to serve people the Rotarian way. Sally was also given the Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Multisport event: Henry encouraged members to Volunteer for Mount Festival of Multi-sport event on the on 22^nd January 2022 and encouraged at least 12 members to provide firm commitment for the event. Even times are from 0613 till 1500 hours.

Emergency service food bank: Emergency services with our support will be collecting food on Tuesday 7^th December. The event will be for Otumoetai road and collect food for the food bank. Volunteers needed for the collection run and with trailers. Team leaves from Tauranga domain at 1730 hours. Please let Kathy Webb know if you can help.

 

Vaccine Passport ( reminder )

This will now be required for entry to the Tauranga Club. Entrants are required to be double vaccinated and to prove this with the passport either printed or on their phone. These requirements are in order to comply with the traffic light system. Whilst in the club, we should be wearing masks unless seated.

Sargent Session: JIM then enlightened our members with some extraordinary events on this day as per google.

Johann Sebastian Bach married his second wife on this day, Eureka rebellion 1854 happened on this day, First human transplant in 1967 and Bhopal gas leak in 1984. He also told us that 21,643,836 people are celebrating their birthdays today (roughly) and 385,000 births today roughly, the size of Christchurch. He then outlined the traits of Sagittarius people (3^rd December) like good looks and sex appeal. They can stand up for themselves as they also have a well-developed ego! He thinks he should have been a Sagittarius. On this day some famous people were born who are YouTube, Instagram and TV actors were born. Ozzie Osborn, Andy Williams, and Rajendra Prasad (first Indian president) were all born on this day.
