Committee meeting reports

Community service
  • Shiv Thammalla informed the club about the unique homes group, even though this name is not finalized. The committee has been working on this project for a while and in conjunction with event manager at Garden and art festival. The project is accepted by Garden and art festival and Rotary board and to go to the next step. Some work remains and the team is working to iron out the final project.
  • Shiv then thanked Henry for organizing the Movie night and proceeds will go to Cure Kids fundraising.
  • Shiv also pressed for the Rotary day out that is coming up in September to be used for raising funds and spreading awareness about the club and its work.
  • Street appeal however remains a concern as it has become redundant over the last 2 years due to COVID.
  • On the 1st of July there is Shorts for Waipuna, it's supposed to coincide with the shortest day, but that hasn't quite worked out this year. Wear shorts and bring extra cash for the sergeant's session as all fines will be donated to the Waipuna Hospice.
International Services
  • Lynda Burch informed the club about club supporting people in Vanuatu by helping people sew and clothe their families. There are 10 machines that our club supports, due to travel restrictions, club is sending fabric over and other items. $1000 from the district grant will be used to ship these items over. Items will be shipped by the end of May.
  • Vanuatu Library project has resulted in second batch of books being sent over and now awaiting delivery confirmation.
  • Fundraisers currently underway are, the auctions provided by people including from club members. It might be pushed to September as team needs more lead in times. Club members please contact Lynda or Maria so that all the items donated can be kept record of. All the proceed will be used for shelter box that can be sent over to places such as Ukraine.
  • Claire has made the quilt and it will be raffled off and proceeds will go to Romack.

Membership and club services
  • Dean encouraged members to carry on with membership drive individually. He also informed us about cross club membership initiative through Rotary awareness expo on 29th of May to showcase Rotary to an extent. Combined membership drive enables people to choose from different clubs that cater for members at different times during the week.
  • He also acknowledged the success with speakers in the club meetings and reiterated to carry forward the great success. He even encouraged members to be speakers if they wished to.

New Generations Committee
  • Andy mentioned that committee has planned to do a fundraiser. Committee want to do this because programs such as RIPEN and outward bound (2 people) are back into action and we would like to do full scholarships for students. Foreign exchange students is on hold due to COVID restrictions.
  • Committee is also undertaking fundraising for trees for Survival to support environment committee.

Sergeant Session: Jim then enlightened our members with some extraordinary events on this day. One of them is the anniversary of the battle of Gate Pa. We are third of the way through the year.  In 1587, Francis Drake  attacked Spanish fleet whilst anchored in Cadiz (It was said he 'singed the King of Spain's beard'). In 1661 china occupied Taiwan and planning to have it again in 2022. 1916, Irish rebels abandoned the post office in Dublin, marking the end of the Easter Rising. In 1995 longest sausage ever of 28.77 miles was made in Canada. We also celebrated national hairball awareness day, world wish day and national zipper day. Its stress awareness month, Parkinson’s awareness month, summer tyre changeover month, national couple appreciation month, straw hat month and Dr Therap month.
